Force of nature
Colleen was a staunch and vocal advocate for her students and would never back down to any authority who challenged or diminished her role.
She retired from SPS because she could no longer suffer the district’s over-push for test scores, control of teachers, and lack of creative problem solving.
She researched, studied, and fought for recognition of the too many cancer victims in her school - Mt. Vernon Elementary.
She died of cancer on Nov. 4, 2023.
In Latin America, activists remember their fallen allies with a cry of “Presenté” - meaning still here with us.

David Berliner, a longtime friend and supporter of CAPE, died in September. A professor, an author, and an activist, David taught at Arizona State University.
David was not only highly intelligent, he was a sharp-eyed critical thinker, an engaging writer and, most of all, a very humble, humorous, and self-deprecating man.
For over 25 years, David had been a national leader in the fight against the corporatization of public education. He defended public education with passion, research, and wit.
He came to Eugene to speak at a CAPE event at the UO Alumni Center on March 28, 2016. He was excellent. The audience loved him. He was very complimentary of our work and viewed us as allies. He was a famous academic, but he viewed us as equal partners. A wonderful person.
Get to know David's work with this easy-to-read and devastatingly insightful book, 50 Myths and Lies That Threaten America's Public Schools.
We are saddened by the loss, but we pledge to continue the fight to preserve, defend, and strengthen public education.
