Our Mission

Community Alliance for Public Education (CAPE) is an advocacy group composed of local public school teachers, parents, students, retired teachers, university professors, and other community members whose goals are to raise awareness and to build community action around public education issues.

Currently, we work to defend, restore, and reclaim our public schools from the damaging practices of “reformers” and corporate interests. To this end, we have sponsored a series of public forums on educational issues and organized speakers coming to Eugene to dialogue with community members on issues such as high-stakes standardized testing, Common Core curriculum, establishing a pro-democracy curriculum and the national movement to defend and renew public education. We also work for progressive tax reform that will provide adequate funding for public education.

The genesis of our organization is the Eugene Education Association’s (EEA) Human & Civil Rights Committee, where many of our members have worked to promote human and civil rights locally and globally.

Additionally, we work with local social justice organizations, with the Oregon Education Association (OEA), and the University of Oregon’s Association of American University Professors (AAUP), and Education programs at Pacific University and the University of Oregon.

We look forward to increasing our work with local parent groups, students, local social justice organizations, other local unions, and to increasingly link our work to similar regional and national groups.
