David Berliner, a longtime friend and supporter of CAPE, died late last week. A  professor, an author, and an activist, David taught at Arizona State University.

David was not only highly intelligent, he was a sharp-eyed critical thinker, an engaging writer and, most of all, a very humble, humorous, and self-deprecating man.

For over 25 years, David had been a national leader in the fight against the corporatization of public education. He defended public education with passion, research, and wit.

He came to Eugene to speak at a CAPE event at the UO Alumni Center on March 28, 2016. He was excellent. The audience loved him. He was very complimentary of our work and viewed us as allies. He was a famous academic, but he viewed us as equal partners. A wonderful person.

We are saddened by the loss, but we pledge to continue the fight to preserve, defend, and strengthen public education.
